Jon Marshalik

My work investigates experiences mediated through mass consumer imagery and contemporary notions of affection.  Collages made from magazines and advertisements act as sources for my paintings; I take these bits of disparate information and image and subject them to perceptual concerns of space from commercial imagery, making a painting that is built in the same way that the world feels built to me.  The gap between the source material and the pictorial logic of the painting creates images that appear deconstructed but are actually rebuilt, seeking to find place and engagement with a world that feels increasingly fragmentary and alienating.
